The Endangered 8:
San José's Most Threatened Architectural and Cultural Landmarks of 2022
First Church of Christ, Scientist
Location:
43 E. St. James Street
Date:
Built 1905
Architect:
Willis Polk
Threat:
Neglect
Architecture critic Alan Hess once called this Willis Polk-designed, Greek-inspired church “one of the most superb pieces of classical architecture in Northern California.” Sadly, its soaring Ionic columns and domed roof have been hidden behind tarps and scaffolding since 2018, when absentee owner Z&L Properties abandoned a long-promised restoration effort. After decades of vacancy and neglect, the building is now likely in critical condition. Immediate inspection, stabilization, and a transfer to new owners are urgently needed to avoid a catastrophic loss.
