Mark's Hot Dogs

Here's the Giant Orange on Alum Rock Ave.

Once seen along many roadways in California, Mark's Hot Dogs on Alum Rock Ave, is one of the last of these Giant Oranges that served orange juice and other treats to automobile travellers. Built in the 1930's, this vernacular roadside building is a designated City Historic Landmark.

After three years of uncertainty and suspense, Mark's Hot Dogs, has relocated to 48 South Capitol Ave (at the corner of Alum Rock) in order to accommodate the construction of a housing project at 1920 Alum Rock Ave.

On February 9th 2003, streams of customers dined one last time at the hot dog stand's original location.  In December 2003, Mark's Hot Dogs reopened at 48 S Capitol Avenue. .

A young Old Building Hugger gives the Orange some last minute encouragement at the temporary closing party, February 9, 2003.

The Orange and its sign were carefully stored until they were ready to be reinstalled. The relocated restaurant features more seating and a new interior that is reminiscent of old diners. Cars can now park under the new canopy without hitting structural supports. The Orange had been in place on Alum Rock Avenue for 56 years.

We thank the City, PAC*SJ members and the owner for their perseverance in finding a way to save one of San Jose's most unusual and delicious landmarks.
